In the TIFF image file format, the second 16-bit word of every file is 42, which is used together with the first word to indicate byte order. In the reiser4 file system, 42 is the inode number of the root directory.

When asking Siri, the new iPhone’s virtual assistant, “What is the meaning of life?”, one of the answers you get is “42.”

Also when you has siri “How much wood would a woodchuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” Siri would respond:

“42 cords of wood, to be exact. Everyone knows that.”

The asterisk, which is used to represent “more information” on occasion is ASCII* character 42. So the must be more to it.
